QEA Empire Flying Boat Poster - c.1940

The Skyways are Today's Highways,
c.1940.

This poster presents an idealised view from the balcony of the Rose Bay flying boat base terminal. The signpost shown was actually at ground level and can be seen in photos of the terminal building, although it reads slightly differently in the poster.

At the time this poster was produced Australia was already at war with Germany, although the Phoney War had not yet led to the conquering of Europe. The 'Kangaroo Route' to the United Kingdom was still open, although passage through the Middle East, Italy and France would soon be severed. A further two years would also see the Japanese cut the remains of the Kangaroo Route in South East Asia.
